Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
