Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he admitted that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
