European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
