British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
