Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
